Whether you’re an experienced 4×4 driver looking for a new adventure, or a beginner that needs to start using your 4×4, we have the trail for now. These South African spots give you the chance to seek adventure, conquer obstacles, and train!
Witsand Kalahari Mountain View 4×4 Dune Route
This route is situated about 20kms outside of Witsand, in the Northern Cape. It happens to be an award-winning trail and is filled with challenges. The trail is perfect for beginners and comprises mostly of farmlands and Kalahari dunes. It’s a fairly easy route of about 36kms with an optional 4kms at the end for experienced drivers to have some fun!
The Three Province 4×4 Trail
Taking about two days to complete and spanning over three provinces, this epic route starts just outside Volksrust on the Waterval farm with stream crossings, mountainous areas, rocky terrain, and muddy holes. It’s one of the most enjoyable beginner 4×4 trails across Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Free State.
Ithala Game Reserve
There are two 4×4 trails in the Ithala Game Reserve – The first one is the Bivane trail which takes you through the reserve’s western flank for about 17kms. The second trail is a more simple 5km road which is ideal for a beginner. The trails can take from half an hour to three hours to complete and you can expect to spot wildlife and numerous plant species along the way.
Karoo National Park
The Karoo National Park has four trails to choose one and one very tough trail for experienced drivers looking for a challenge. The longest is Nuweveld which is 50kms of steep rocky parts and sandy river crossings. Other trails include the shorter Afsaal Eco-Trail branches off the Potlekkertjie Loop. There’s also the Kookfontein Loop and Sandrivier Loop which take about an hour and lead on from Nuweveld and Afsaal.
There’s also a slightly longer and very challenging Pienaars Pass Trail where you can take in views of rolling plains and scenic mountains.
Knysna Forest 4×4 Trail
This route allows you to experience what lies deep in the Garden Route. Expect forest streams, ancient yellowwood and stinkwood trees as well colourful birds. You can take on the route in your 4×4 or let someone do the work for you with the “hop-on” option. You’ll even discover an area where a crashed helicopter laid for seven years!
