The winter definitely kicked in for most parts of South Africa, and apart from our bodies needing a few extras to stay warm, your vehicles, bakkies and canopies need some protection from the chill as well.
Beekman Super Canopies have put together some tips to help you this winter:
Wiper Blades
If your car is parked outside during the day or even over the night, turn the wipers off before turning off your car. Ice can build-up and put strain on the wiper blades when used immediately on restarting your car.
Before you leave the house on a cold morning, clear any frost build-up with warm, not boiling, water.
Tread
Inspect your tyres to ensure they have adequate tread. Driving with worn-out tyres can be a hazard for yourself and others on the road.
Pressure
Colder temperatures can cause low tyre pressure. A tyre that has 2 bars in summer can easily drop to 1.8 bar in winter. Ensure your tyres are correctly inflated.
Charged and oiled
Engines are harder to start in winter. Make sure your car’s battery is checked and your oil has been changed or topped up.
Starting up
The colder the temperature, the lower the rate of fuel evaporation and the harder it is for the fuel in your engine to ignite. A fresh set of spark plugs or a car service can make a significant difference.
Fog
Fogged up windows are a big safety risk. Check that your car’s defogger and defroster are working well, as well as your car’s heater.
Fuel
The last thing you want in the winter is to get stuck on the side of the road with no petrol. Make sure you always keep your tank above full during the colder months.
Even when the above has been followed, there’s always a chance of something happening. Make sure you have an emergency plan in place and know the numbers of your insurance and roadside assistance.
