Avoid Holiday Fatigue

If you find yourself feeling tired or not fully concentrating on what’s happening on the roads, please take a few seconds of your time to read the below tips for avoiding holiday fatigue.

Firstly, try to avoid travelling too far within a short time frame. Instead, be selective about your travels so that you do not put unnecessary pressure on yourself to rush and complete the entire trip in one go. If possible, try to plan a trip closer to home so that you know the drive will not be too draining and that you will be refreshed and fully alert while driving. This will also remove unnecessary pressure and allow you to enjoy the scenery along the way.

When planning your trip, ensure that you get enough sleep the night before and select the most direct route. Scheduling regular breaks or pitstops along the way will be beneficial to allow yourself to breathe in some fresh air and stretch your legs.

Bringing nutritious snacks to eat in the car is a good source of energy. Try to avoid foods which will result in energy slumps, such as too many carbohydrates and lots of sugar. If stimulants such as coffee help you to stay alert, ensure that you have some with you or get some along the way, but keep in mind that coffee can also cause a slump in energy levels after some time.

If you are travelling with children, ensure that they are adequately entertained so that you are not distracted, as this can also cause you to feel fatigued. If you are driving alone and start to feel drowsy, pull over in a safe spot to allow yourself to rest for a few minutes, or take a 20-minute nap if need be. If you are travelling in a group, take turns driving to allow everyone to get efficient rest.

At the end of the day, only you know what works for you when trying to stay awake and alert while on the roads. Do not make the mistake of ignoring your drowsiness and thinking that you can continue in that state as your decision could lead to tragic consequences.
