How Bakkies Are Driving The Price of South Africa’s Used Car Market
Cars.co.za in collaboration with getWorth have recently released interesting automotive data revealing the car brands which are responsible for the increased prices seen in South Africa’s used car market.
Between the years 2016 and 2020, there was a noticeable trend in car prices which showed that they were steadily on the decline. In August 2020, everything changed when used car prices started to increase again. As of now, vehicle prices situated between R200 000 and R300 000 are starting to stabilize once again.
Surprisingly, car brands that are seeing the most price growth are Bakkies. Car brands such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max/KB are the most requested vehicles which are placing in the top 10 positions when it comes to vehicle requests on Cars.co.za.
There is an increased demand for these bakkies which is contributing to further growth. The collected data shows that the prices of bakkies, namely Toyota and Isuzu bakkies, are continuing to rise while Ford prices are stabilizing. Since the very first lockdown in South Africa, both Single-Cab and Double-Cab bakkies have proven to show strong price increases overall.
Other car brands such as Kia, Renault, and Hyundai are nearing their pre-Lockdown levels, while on the other hand car brands such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan’s prices are even stronger than they were previously in 2019.
Another interesting trend shows that Sedan buyers seem to be shifting towards SUVs and crossovers, which could lead to overall growth in that category. In October 2021, Cars.co.za revealed that the top 10 most-requested cars were as listed below:
