Padkos to make you bos

When it comes time to hit the road on that road trip there are many things to consider. Has your vehicle been serviced? Are your tyres in good condition? Did you remember to pack all your clothes and toiletries? Also critical is ensuring you have prepared your padkos as a road trip without snacks is just unacceptable.

Prepping your car for padkos is quite simple. A cooler box with ice packs should be enough to keep drinks and food cold and fresh, ice is less preferable as it melts and will create a mess. Also ensure you have a car bin handy, ideally a brown paper bag or plastic packet for any snack waste.

SAVOURY
Not too sweet, just right! Here are some high-energy savoury snacks you can prepare for your trip:

Sandwiches
There is nothing like a well-made sandwich, with endless combination options offering great taste, protein, and glucose, they will give you what you need to keep going. Some fillings you can include on your sandwiches include:
– Hummus
– Marmite
– Cheese (nothing processed though)
– Eggs with a lite mayo
– Avo
– Tomato
– Cucumber

Vegetable sticks
Vegetable sticks is such an easy snack for the road. Easy to make and offering a wide range of tastes our favourites include cucumbers, celery, red, yellow, green peppers, cherry, and carrots. Adding a dip like hummus will also add to the flavour.

Boiled eggs
A classic padkos snack, boiled eggs offer a protein boost in a quick-to-eat package. Note in terms of maintaining your stamina on a long drive one should avoid over-filling on these.

Oat jars
Oats are packing with nutrients and energy which is why they are so popular as a breakfast dish. Prep your oats the night before and leave them to soak with your additional ingredients. Avoid excessive milk and sugar, rather use those additional ingredients to boost flavour, here are our favourites:
– Blueberries
– Chia seeds
– Pumpkin seeds
– Sunflower seeds
– A plant-based milk or very minimal cows’ milk (which can sour and cause a stench)
Vegetable crisps or popcorn
You can buy these morish snacks in the shops or make them at home. We always prefer homemade as one can control ingredients better and keep an eye on the amount of sodium and sugar in them. The best veggies for crisps are beetroots, sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, or butternut. To prepare vegetable crisps slice up your veggies using a mandolin or grater, sprinkle them with your preferred seasoning and add a splash of olive oil then throw everything into the oven for 2.5 hours at 150ºC.

SWEET
There’s nothing like some sweet treats on a road trip. And that doesn’t need to mean junk food either. Here are some of our favourite sweet padkos snacks.

Scones
Add some extra ingredients to your scones to boost their flavour! We love:
– Chocolate chips
– Lemon and cranberry
– Peanut butter and bacon

Brownies
Sweet and full of flavour, brownies just can’t be beaten! They’re a great way to get a sugar fix and can be embellished to one’s heart’s desire depending on how much prep time you have.

Peanut butter cups
Carrying on with the chocolate theme peanut butter cups offer a nice balance between the nutty goodness of peanuts and the sweetness of chocolate! They are also easy to make oneself or simply buy in-store.

Whichever road trip snacks you decide to pack, don’t forget to take in those extra 5 minutes enjoying the sun while you have a snack!
